Clothing and Styling Tips for Maternity Sessions
Maternity sessions are a unique type of photograph and we want to make sure our clients leave with photographs they will be proud to display for years to come. Every woman is beautiful and we want to capture the beauty of each woman's maternity session and help you look your best.
As a family photographer, it's essential that we capture your pregnancy in the most genuine way. One way to do this is by styling you in ways that feel comfortable and authentic to you. I want to share with you some of my tips for making the maternity you look beautiful (and not awkward).
One of the most common questions that I get is, “What to wear in a maternity photo shoot?” My response is always the same. There's no right way to dress — You're free to wear a gown that you own or pick one out of our modest selections in the studio.
There are lots of maternity clothing options available these days, but finding the right look for your session may not be as easy as it seems. Thankfully, we've pulled together some tips and tricks to help you find your best maternity style!
Finding Your Perfect Maternity Photo Shoot Outfit
Look for fabrics that stretch well — especially if you're planning on doing any physical activity during the shoot (like walking or dancing). The fabric should also be breathable for comfort reasons — no one wants to feel hot and sweaty.
Lightweight fabrics like cotton and rayon are best. Stay away from anything too heavy or thick as it will probably be uncomfortable during your session. If you're worried about the heat, try wearing something like a lightweight sweater over your dress instead of tights or leggings underneath if it's warm out.
Wear Something That Makes You Feel Good!
If it's uncomfortable or restrictive, it will show in your photos. You don't have to spend a lot of money on fancy maternity shoot dresses either — just wear something that fits well and looks nice on you!
Don't worry about wearing something too casual or too formal. Your maternity pictures are meant to capture the joy of expecting a new baby, and not just any clothes will do! The best thing to wear is clothing that feels comfortable and looks flattering on camera.
Hair Up or Hair Down?
One of the most difficult struggles for moms has been their hair falling into their faces as they glance down at their growing belly bumps.
Choose hairstyles that complement your maternity photoshoot outfit and face shape best (if possible). Don't go for anything too complicated if it doesn't suit your style or face shape well — stick with simple, elegant styles instead like a side braid or ponytail for example which will look great no matter what hairstyle you have naturally!
This or that: Light or Heavy Makeup
It totally depends on your skin, the style of maternity photo ideas you're going for, and your comfort level.
If you have great skin and you want to show it off, then by all means go for a light application of foundation, blush, bronzer and highlighter. But if your skin is dry or if you normally wear heavier makeup and feel more comfortable with it, then there's no reason not to wear it during a maternity shoot.
Just keep in mind that you don't want makeup to be the focal point of the photos — otherwise, you'll end up with something that looks like a glamour shot. You should still look like yourself at the end of it all! So if that means wearing heavier makeup than usual, or even no makeup at all (if that's what makes you feel most comfortable), then do it!
Clear Takeaways
In the end, what's more important than clothing choice, is how you feel. Or, more importantly, the baby's comfort. Whether that means you rock a loose-fitting tank top and shorts or a flowing maxi dress, just remember that it should be a decision that makes you feel good and shows off your baby bump in all its glory. Besides, whatever dresses you’ll wear that day instantly become the best maternity shoot dresses.
