Why Your Home Could Be the Ideal Setting for Your Family Session

unnamed-5

ou have been contemplating hiring a professional photographer to take pictures of your family. Or maybe you already are working with one and you are preparing for your family session. The location of your family photography session is important. If you want the experience to be comfortable and relaxed, picking the correct venue is pivotal. What could be better than capturing special moments happening in your home!?
As a photographer, I always love shooting at my clients’ homes. It often gives me a different perspective on the way I approach photographing families, children and lifestyle sessions.
The home is one of the most intimate places on earth. It represents the emotional ties that bind people to each other and shouldn't be overtaken by staged or posed photos. Here are some reasons why your home could be the ideal setting for your family shoot:

It's familiar

Your home is where you feel most comfortable, so it's only natural that this would be the perfect place to take pictures of your family. Plus, you can use your items and decorate them any way you want.
You can control the environment. You know what kind of light will work best in which room, you know where to put the furniture and how to arrange it, and you know what time of day to schedule the session because you're familiar with the sun's position throughout the year (and if it's ever too bright or too dark).
You can control the temperature. If you're shooting during the summer months, then having air conditioning or fans running gives you more options when it comes to wardrobe choices and poses. If you're shooting during the winter months, however, the heat may make posing difficult if everyone is wearing heavy clothes and coats!

It's convenient.

You don't have to drive all over town looking for a great location; you've already got it right at home! The location is also easy to access and convenient for everyone involved.

You won't have to worry about coordinating outfits or coordinating schedules. Your family already knows what to wear and when to show up. Plus, there won't be any other people milling around getting in the way of your photo shoot (or getting their photos taken). Just you and your family!

You also don't need to worry about bringing in props or furniture because they're already there! This makes life easier on both photographer and client because it cuts down on time spent packing up and unpacking between locations during a photo shoot (and money spent on gas).

You won't get lost trying to find parking or navigate traffic. You'll just have to drive right up to the front door!

It's affordable.

Many photographers charge by the hour or by the project size, so if you're looking for a low-cost way to get family photos taken, at-home sessions are a great option since they don't require an expensive location or travel time on anyone's part.

It’s where you feel most comfortable. You spend the majority of your time at home, so it makes sense that it would be a comfortable setting for photos as well. You don’t want to be fidgeting around on someone else’s couch or rushing through a photo shoot because you’re worried about getting in trouble for being late for work or school!

The Takeaway

The reason it's so beneficial to have your portraits taken in your home (versus anywhere else) is that it allows you, in effect, to bring your space with you wherever you go. Speaking from my own experience, when I look at our family photos around the house I'm reminded of everything I appreciate about where we live, and all of the reasons why it makes sense for us to stay here in our sweet little home. Whether you've been here five years or fifty, a picture is worth a thousand words—and those words should always be spoken by you.
